Abstract
Sensitivity test against gentamicin, carbenicillin and kanamycin, and in combination was carried out with a strain of Serratia marcescens isolated from septicemia, and test strain was moderately resistant to these an tibiotics especially against kanamycin. Paradoxical result was observed, i.e., secondary isolate, which was isolated after 10 days of treatment of gentamicin and kanamycin, was more sensitive to these drugs than first isolate. As compared to the rapid increased in the resistance of the test strain against carbenicillin in vitro, resistance acquisition to gentamicin was slow and weak. When carbenicillin was combined with either gentamicin or kanamycin marked synergistic actions were exhibited, but no such action was observed when gentamicin was combined with kanamycin.
